Report details terms Leeds will agree with Patrick Bamford after snubbing Matej Vydra

Leeds United are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Patrick Bamford, but only after a late snub of Matej Vydra this summer.

According to a report from the Daily Mirror’s live transfer blog (29/07; 18:58), Matej Vydra was at Leeds’ training ground to discuss a potential move before the Whites decided to snub the Derby County ace and pursue a deal for Patrick Bamford.

One of Marcelo Bielsa’s top priorities for much of the window appears to have been signing a new striker with Leeds lacking experienced goalscorers within their ranks. Kemar Roofe has led the line in Bielsa’s stronger lineups during pre-season and has done a decent job, but it would be a huge gamble to go into the opening day of the new Championship season without a new addition arriving through the door.

And it appears that Bamford is set to be that man, with the Daily Mirror reporting that the Middlesbrough ace is in discussions over a £32,000-a-week deal at Elland Road after a £6.5 million fee was agreed between the two sides.

However, it seems that it was very nearly a different forward coming in to potentially lead the line in the curtain-raiser with Stoke City, with the Daily Mirror (29/07; 18:58) reporting that Vydra was so close to a move to Leeds that he travelled to Thorp Arch for talks before the plug was pulled on a potential deal.

The Mirror adds that Vydra’s agents’ demand of a contract paying in excess of £50,000-a-week prompted the Whites to bring an end to discussions at their training ground.

The snub from Leeds certainly puts Vydra in a difficult position with the Mirror reporting that Derby hope to sell the Czech Republic international before the window closes. It remains to be seen what the future holds for last season’s top goalscorer in the Championship, but Leeds will be hoping that Bamford’s potential move goes through and the decision to pursue the former Chelsea youngster is swiftly vindicated.
