According to Marca, Tottenham Hotspur have opted against signing Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho due to his current high wages.

The Brazil international just hasn’t got going at Barca since signing from Liverpool.

Coutinho is currently on loan at Bayern Munich. However, the Bundesliga leaders will not exercise the option to buy him permanently for a £108 million fee.

Barca are keen to offload the playmaker this summer with the Premier League a likely destination.

Marca claim Barcelona have offered Coutinho to Tottenham. The North London club, however, have turned down the proposal due to Coutinho’s wages.

The former Liverpool man is earning around £260,000 per week at the Nou Camp.

The Spanish editorial say Spurs can’t match Barca-type wages, especially for a top earner and the club are unwilling to spend such figures on just one player.

Tottenham need a revamp under Jose Mourinho following their season struggles.

Spurs were knocked out of the Champions League and the FA Cup prior to the Covid-19 suspension. In the league, they are down in eighth.

The sale of Christian Eriksen in January has left the side short on creativity.

But Tottenham’s likely route is to sign young players with high re-sale value. A player such as Coutinho no doubt goes against the club’s philosophy.

Marca go on to say a move to Newcastle United is a more plausible destination with the Magpies in the midst of a Saudi billionaire takeover.
