Newcastle are reportedly scouting Rennes wide man Jeremy Doku ahead of a potential summer move, and French outlet Jeunes Footeux claim he could cost an enormous £66million. Doku is enduring an injury-hit campaign.
The Chronicle reported earlier this month that 10-time Belgium star Newcastle were interested in signing Doku – with head of recruitment Steve Nickson and his scouts looking at the ex-Anderlecht speed machine.
Doku joined Rennes in the summer of 2020 from Anderlecht, but properly threw his name onto the European stage at Euro 2021. But this season, he has suffered knee and hamstring issues – but Newcastle are interested.
Jeunes Footeux now report how much it would take the 19-year-old wonderkid – and they reckon a huge £66million might be needed to sign him. GFFN report that Rennes spent £22million plus add-ons to get him.
Newcastle eye Doku: £66m is enormous, but he huge potential
Newcastle are expected to make numerous signings in the summer, despite spending the best part of £100million in January. Financial Fairplay may dictate their level of spending – but Doku at £66million is hugely expensive.
Doku is a top player, with enormous potential and huge speed. His end product is improving and on the right of a three with Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson or Chris Wood, Newcastle boast an exciting front three.
But at £66million, he is far too expensive – even with his potential. Injuries this season will be alarming for Newcastle. A fee under £50million would be more understandable for Doku, but even then, it is a risk.
