Glasgow Rangers thought they were about to bring Derek McInnes to Ibrox, and it appears that McInnes was thinking along similar lines.

Last week was an extremely turbulent for Rangers supporters, with McInnes seemingly looking set to be named as Pedro Caixinha’s successor before ultimately deciding to stay at Aberdeen and then taking charge of their clash with Dundee on Friday night, while the Light Blues responded to the snub by giving Graeme Murty the job until the end of the calendar year.

And it appears that McInnes himself was expecting to take over at Ibrox at one stage, as the Evening Times reports that he came close to signing a three-year deal with the club and even started to consider his potential lineup for Saturday’s game against Ross.
The fact that he was contemplating who would feature in what would have been his first game in charge certainly shows that he – at some stage – thought that he was going to be leaving Aberdeen and end up back at former club Rangers.

Luckily for Rangers, the snub does not appear to have hurt them in the short-term as Murty oversaw a victory against Ross to move the Gers back into second in the Scottish Premiership, ahead of McInnes’ Dons on goal difference.
Rangers travel to Easter Road to take on Hibernian on Wednesday, while Aberdeen are also on the road tomorrow as they face St Johnstone.
