Derby County will not stand in Mike Te Wierik’s way if he wants to leave Pride Park in January with clubs in Holland and Germany showing an interest, as reported by Voetbal International.

When Phillip Cocu was fired just weeks into the 2020/21 campaign, the writing was on the wall for a Dutch defender who joined the Rams on a free transfer over the summer.

Te Wierik was Cocu’s signing after all and the sudden departure of the former PSV Eindhoven boss left the 28-year-old in a very awkward position.

Interim coach Wayne Rooney clearly doesn’t share his predecessor’s admiration for the one-time Groningen captain either, with Te Wierik frozen out of the first-team picture.

His last Championship appearance came during a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth back in October.

According to VI, Derby would have no qualms about cutting their losses in January. Rooney’s Rams have conceded just twice in their last six league games with Curtis Davies, Andre Wisdom and Matt Clark impressing in Te Wierik’s absence,

Heracles Almeo and Fortuna Sittard have both expressed an interest, as have German second-tier outfit St Pauli.

There is also a chance that Te Wierik could return to a Groningen side he played nearly 100 games for between 2017 to 2020.

“If the situation remains as it is now, then I will certainly be open to it,” the experienced defender told RTV Noord when asked about a second spell at the Euroborg recently.
