According to The Sunday Mirror (29/11, p72), Derby County want to take Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff on loan in January.

It’s claimed that Steve McClaren will be in charge of football operations at Pride Park, and he could launch a raid on former club Newcastle.

McClaren had two spells at Derby with a stint at Newcastle in between, and may now look to give Longstaff a chance at first-team football.

Derby don’t actually have a manager right now, but they will hope to have a boss in place ahead of the January window following Phillip Cocu’s exit.

Longstaff, 20, came into the Newcastle first-team setup last season and scored twice, with both goals coming against Manchester United.

The midfielder struggled for consistent playing time though, and it looked like he would leave the club at the end of his contract last season before finally signing a new deal back in August.

This term, Longstaff has played just 29 minutes of Premier League football, and Steve Bruce may feel that he can benefit from half a season on loan in the Championship.

He would be learning from Wayne Rooney at Pride Park, and after brother Sean Longstaff benefited from spells at Kilmarnock and Blackpool, Matty could now follow suit.
