If Dennis Praet leaves Sampdoria, Newcastle United looks a more likely destination than Everton.

Rafael Benitez has not been given much chance to show off his pulling power this summer. The Spaniard is one of the most respected manager’s in the game with two La Liga titles and a Champions League trophy on his CV.

Consequently, his presence in the Newcastle United dugout would surely make St James’ Park a far more attractive proposition to potential targets. However, with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley reluctant to open his wallet and improve Newcastle’s squad, Benitez’ undoubted stature and pulling power has been somewhat underused.

Though, according to The Chronicle (live blog, 30th August, 7.55am), Benitez could still make his mark before the end of the transfer window. The report claims that Sampdoria midfielder Dennis Praet would choose Newcastle United over Everton due to a desire to work with Benitez.

Newcastle are reportedly willing to meet Samp’s £18.5 million asking price for the Belgian international midfielder.

However, with the Serie A side still looking for a replacement, they are unwilling to let Praet leave for the moment. Yet, this latest revelation means it is worth keeping a close eye on this potential deal as the hours tick down towards the end of the transfer window.

Nonetheless, Newcastle paying £18.5 million would make Praet their record signing, eclipsing the fee they paid Real Madrid for Michael Owen all the way back in 2005.

Whether Praet is worthy of such a fee remains to be seen. The 23-year-old was seen as one of Europe’s most talented youngsters when making his name at Anderlecht but his star has fallen somewhat recently and he was far from a revelation at Sampdoria last season.
