Report: Defender rebuffed Liverpool’s interest in the summer; he is open to PL move now

According to a report from 90min, Liverpool and Manchester City target David Alaba is now open to a move to the Premier League.

The Austrian has been one of the best players in the Bundesliga for years. Alaba is in the final year of his contract, and it looks like he will be leaving Bayern Munich either in January or for free next summer.

Liverpool could do with a player like Alaba in their squad. The Reds are set to be without Virgil van Dijk for a large part of this season, if not all of it. Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are expected to do the job in the Dutchman’s absence, with Fabinho helping out when required.

That has worked fairly well for Liverpool so far. But signing a new defender in January would be a sensible option. A serial winner like Alaba would give them the push they need to retain their Premier League crown, and him reportedly being open to a move to England is a big plus as well.

The report claims that Liverpool were interested in signing Alaba in the summer. However, the Austrian rebuffed their interest as he was only keen on a move to either Real Madrid or Barcelona.

The two Spanish giants haven’t shown any serious interest in Alaba. That has forced the Bayern Munich man to look at the Premier League, and who better to join than the best team in the country.

A move for Alaba in January is a no-brainer

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool make a move for Alaba in January. That will be Bayern’s last opportunity to make some money off him, and the Reds have already exploited a similar situation when they signed Thiago in the summer.

Alaba would be a great addition to any team. The Austrian can play in the heart of the defence or in his natural left-back position. He can also play further ahead in midfield and, at 28, he is in the prime of his career.

Three games a week seem to have become a norm, and that increases the risk of injury significantly. A versatile player like Alaba would ease the pressure on Liverpool’s current defenders, which makes a move for him a no-brainer in January.
