The Lech Poznan defender is set to sign for Southampton in a £5.7m deal.

Southampton are closing in on a summer capture as Lech Poznan defender Jan Bednarek is in Hampshire to complete a medical with the club, with new boss Mauricio Pellegrino looking to bolster his defensive options, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The Poland U21 international, who coincidentally was sent off against England U21’s last week, will sign for the Saints in a £5.7m deal, though it is believed that Bednarek’s arrival doesn’t mean that Virgin van Dijk will be leaving St Mary’s Stadium.

The 21-year-old has made 40 appearances in all competitions for Poznan and is seen as a big star for the future in his homeland, and has turned down interest from Hannover 96 and Freiburg from Germany in order to sign for the Saints.

By doing so, he will become Pellegrino’s first signing for the club, with the former Valencia and Alaves manager immediately trying to build from the back in his new surroundings as he prepares himself for a season in the Premier League.

One player who won’t be part of Pellegrino’s plans however is Jay Rodriguez, with the same Daily Mail report claiming that he will be soon signing for West Bromwich Albion in a deal of around £14m by the weekend, which implies that a forward could be arriving to replace the former Burnley man.

Last season, Southampton finished eighth in the Premier League – two places lower than where they finished in the 2015/16 season – and will be looking to mount a charge on the top six again under their new manager.
