Clark is currently on loan from Villa at league Two side Port Vale.

Birmingham Live have claimed that Aston Villa manager Dean Smith was in attendance to cast his eye over defender Mitchell Clark during Monday night’s Under-23 clash against Stoke City.

The 19-year-old played 45 minutes of a 3-2 defeat to the Potters, turning out for the first half of the clash which was held at Stafford Rangers. He is currently working to regain match sharpness after a hamstring injury.

Clark remains on loan at League Two side Port Vale, but is eligible to play for Villa’s second string. He is expected to be available for Vale selection again in the coming days.

Naturally a centre-back but able to play on either side of the defence, Clark managed only a half under the watchful eye of Smith. Indeed, Wales youth international Clark has been in good form for Vale, making 21 appearances this season.

Villa have just Axel Tuanzebe and James Chester as first-team central defenders, and it is a position Smith will want to strengthen in the January transfer window.

With Smith watching, it could suggest that Villa are potentially looking at recalling Clark – who has featured for the club’s senior side only once in his career. Villa do have a clause in his loan deal, allowing a January recall.
