According to The Daily Star, Aston Villa manager Dean Smith wants to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window despite Jed Steer putting pen to paper on a new contract.

As announced on Villa’s official website, Steer has signed a new deal with Villa that will see him stay at Villa Park until 2023.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper did well for Villa during the second half of the past season after returning earlier than expected from his loan spell at Charlton Athletic.

The Daily Star has claimed that Villa are interested in signing Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland this summer.

Good plan from Dean Smith?

Butland is a very good goalkeeper and is too good to play in the Championship, and Villa will be a better player with the 26-year-old England international in it.

Steer is a good goalkeeper as well, but Butland is better and is more reliable, as he has a lot of experience in the Premier League.

Villa will be hoping to finish in the top 10 of the Premier League next season.
