Dean Smith could still bring James Collins to Aston Villa.

According to the Birmingham Mail, new Aston Villa boss Dean Smith is looking to give James Collins another chance to prove himself and earn a contract.
Smith has arrived as Steve Bruce’s replacement, leaving Brentford to earn a dream job with his boyhood club, with his presentation taking place on Monday earlier this week.
Smith highlighted in his introductory press conference that Villa currently have a very unbalanced squad, with more centre backs needed at the club.
Axel Tuanzebe and James Chester are the only proven options there right now, and the Birmingham Mail report that Smith is considering a free agent to aid his cause.
It’s stated that James Collins is back training with the club again, with Smith keen to watch the Welshman in training ahead of potentially offering a deal.
The report notes that Bruce was close to handing Collins a contract having spent time training with Villa last month, and now Smith could make him his first Villa signing if he impresses.

The 35-year-old has been a free agent since leaving West Ham United at the end of last season, and could provide proven relief in the heart of the back line for a Villa side short of defenders.
Collins has already had one spell with Villa, making 108 appearances before re-joining West Ham in 2012, and if Smith likes what he sees, he could be in line for a Villa Park return imminently.
