Aston Villa reportedly won’t be signing Gary Cahill in January.

According to The Telegraph, Aston Villa have abandoned a pursuit for Chelsea defender Gary Cahill due to a £4million outlay just for a loan deal.
Villa undoubtedly need a centre back during the January transfer window, with Axel Tuanzebe and James Chester the only recognised options right now.
Steve Bruce failed to replace John Terry at the end of last season, and a deal for free agent James Collins has fallen through after the Welshman suffered an injury in training.
Now, The Telegraph report that boss Dean Smith wanted to bring Chelsea’s Cahill back to Villa Park, but a move in next month’s transfer window has been abandoned.
It’s claimed that just taking Cahill on loan for six months would cost £4million in wages and a loan fee, meaning Villa are looking towards other options instead.
Talks were held with Chelsea, who are willing to let the veteran go in January, but a return to Villa Park won’t be going through unless there is a change of heart next month.

The 33-year-old came up through the Villa ranks and spent eight years with the club, before leaving for Bolton Wanderers in 2008.
An England international in recent years, Cahill has struggled for playing time under Maurizio Sarri and would have been a superb signing for Villa, but Smith will now have to look elsewhere.
