Tottenham are pursuing Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez.
According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez was not in training with the rest of the squad this afternoon – and it’s believed to be related to a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Sanchez, 21, only joined Ajax from Atletico Nacional in his native Colombia last summer, and he was initially played in the Jong Ajax team to adjust to life in the Netherlands, but he quickly became a first-team regular with the Amsterdam giants.
The centre back went on to make 43 appearances in all competitions last season, notching an impressive six goals from defence as he not only impressed in the Eredivisie, but also in the Europa League as Ajax reached the final, only to lose to Manchester United.
In recent days, speculation has surrounded Sanchez’s future, with Tottenham Hotspur pursuing his signature ahead of the transfer deadline in a fortnight’s time – and De Telegraaf now report that the defender wasn’t in training with the rest of the Ajax squad this afternoon.
Marcel Keizer’s men take on Rosenborg in a Europa League play-off clash this evening, and whilst Sanchez was expected to take part despite the speculation, he wasn’t seen in training this afternoon, sparking a belief in the Netherlands that he could be on his way.
It’s claimed that the reason for Sanchez’s no-show is ‘related to Tottenham’, either meaning that Spurs have struck a deal and managed to get him pulled from tonight’s game, or that Sanchez is refusing to play in order to force a move to North London.
Sanchez is believed to have provisionally agree a five-year contract with Tottenham, meaning that an agreement on a fee between the two clubs is missing, with Spurs offering a deal worth up to £36million and Ajax holding out for £45million.
Whilst Mauricio Pochettino has Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier at his disposal, the anticipated exit of Kevin Wimmer means that Sanchez – a strong, quick centre back with huge potential – could initially arrive as cover before developing into a first-team star with Spurs.
