According to The Scottish Sun, Aston Villa will appoint former Rangers assistant manager David Weir as a scout until the end of the season.

Weir, 37, was a Rangers hero as a player with almost 250 appearances to his name, and returned to Ibrox as Mark Warburton’s assistant manager in 2015.

Whilst the former centre back helped Rangers win promotion to the top flight in 2016, Warburton left the club last month – and Weir followed out of the Ibrox exit door.

Frank McParland, who also left Rangers, has already landed a job having been appointed as Director of Football at Nottingham Forest, whilst Warburton remains out of work – but Weir appears to have landed himself a new job.

The Scottish Sun report that former Everton ace Weir is set to head back to England, and will be appointed by Aston Villa as a scout until the end of the season.

It’s stated that Weir offered his services to the club, and will reunite with Villa’s technical director Steve Round, having worked together at Everton.

Weir will now provide a knowledge of Scottish football at Villa Park, with Steve Bruce preparing for the summer transfer window – but Weir may not be in line for a long-term stay with the club.

The report claims that Weir ultimately wants a return to management rather than scouting, having endured a nightmare spell in charge of Sheffield United in 2013, winning just once in 13 games.

Weir will be hoping that his work at Villa Park can help catapult him back into a management job this summer, though his poor record at Sheffield United and his acrimonious Rangers exit may count against him.
