According to a report in the Daily Star, Sunderland boss David Moyes has met with chief executive Martin Bain about transfer targets for next season already.
Moyes and Bain are said to have held a series of meetings over potential new arrivals in the summer at Sunderland.
The Black Cats realise that they need to make a number of amendments to their current first-team, with their relegation now looking inevitable.
Sunderland are currently nine points adrift of safety in the Premier League, with just six matches remaining this season.
If Sunderland are to drop into the Championship, they are likely to be extremely active in the summer transfer window.
Moyes’ side will be targeting an immediate return to the top flight, and they will give the Scottish boss funds to spend.
Moyes is not believed to be in danger of losing his job, even if Sunderland go down, as the North East club have faith in his managerial ability.
Sunderland are next in action at the weekend, when they take on fellow strugglers Middlesbrough.
