League One title hopefuls Sunderland turned down the chance to sign former Newcastle United defender David Edgar on a free transfer.

Two months ago, Jack Ross confirmed that David Edgar would not be joining Sunderland, as reported by The Echo.
A former Newcastle United defender and Canada international, the 31-year-old found himself without a club after his contract at Ottowa Fury came to an end.
And a return to the North East appeared to be on the cards with Sunderland taking him on trial midway through the League One season. But it seems that Edgar, who is versatile enough to play anywhere across the back four, did not do enough to impress during his time on Wearside.
“He came in last week and trained. There’s nothing we’ll pursue on that,” Ross said.
Any hopes that Edgar had of kick-starting his career back in England appeared to be over. But maybe not. It seems that the veteran defender could be on his way back to the North East after all – albeit with a club two divisions further down the footballing pyramid.

According to the Hartlepool Mail, Edgar could sign for non-league Hartlepool United as they aim to solve a defensive injury crisis. It is reported that a number of other clubs in the area are also interested in snapping up the former Burnley and Birmingham City man.
So while Sunderland slammed the door, there is still a window or two open for Edgar.
