Stendel looks set to succeed Jose Morais at Barnsley, despite the club’s discussions with two domestic bosses.
Daniel Stendel has flown to Barnsley for a final meeting with club officials about becoming the Tykes’ new manager, according to the Sun.
Stendel, the former boss of Hannover 96, shot to the top of the Barnsley betting on Monday.
And according to the newspaper, he is the Tykes’ first choice to succeed Jose Morais, following talks with Gareth Ainsworth and Grant McCann – a former player at Oakwell.
The 44-year-old spent the best part of a year in charge of Hannover – the only club he has ever managed – but was sacked in March 2017, despite leading the club at which he spent seven years as a player to fourth in the second tier standings.
Die Roten did however gain promotion two months later as runners-up under André Breitenreiter, ensuring an instant return to the Bundesliga.
Should Stendel take the reins at Barnsley, he would find the Yorkshire club in a similar predicament to the one in which he found Hannover, after they slipped out of the Championship last season.
His imminent appointment has confused fans and players alike, according to the Sun.
