Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to keep Toby Alderweireld at the club.
Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has attempted to ease fears over the future of defender Toby Alderweireld, as reported by the London Evening Standard.
Spurs swooped to hijack Southampton and sign Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid back in the summer of 2015, with the £11.5million outlay (Daily Mail) now looking like a bargain.
Having been reunited with Belgian international teammate and former Ajax defensive partner Jan Vertonghen, Alderweireld has emerged as arguably the Premier League’s top centre back.
Alderweireld, 28, now has more than 100 appearances for Spurs to his name, and his importance to Mauricio Pochettino means that his contract has become a talking point.
The Telegraph reported back in September that Alderweireld is earning just £50,000-a-week on his current Spurs deal, and the defender’s agent hinted that he must be paid more, or be sold at the end of the season.
With no sign of talks progressing, fans are understandably concerned about Alderweireld’s future, fearing that he could leave the club in 2018 if a deal isn’t sorted soon.
Now, in a fan forum meeting on Monday – as reported by the London Evening Standard – Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has spoken to supporters about the situation, telling them that he is ‘confident’ that a deal will be struck to keep Alderweireld at the club for the long term.
Fans will be pleased with that signal of intent, but until a deal is confirmed, they will continue to worry that the defender will end up following Kyle Walker out of the club.
