Report: Crystal Palace could be offered Demarai Gray and £10m by Leicester for Andros Townsend

Crystal Palace appear to be on the verge of one of the summer’s best deals it seems, with Leicester City keen to sign Andros Townsend.

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Leicester are considering offering Crystal Palace the chance to sign Demarai Gray and receive £10 million in exchange for Andros Townsend this summer.

The Mirror reports that Leicester are keen on Townsend and a £27 million fee had been suggested with the winger’s Eagles future in doubt after he has struggled to make an impact under new boss Frank De Boer.

However, the Mirror adds that rather than a deal being done that simply consists of an up front fee, the Foxes are considering the idea of offering Palace £10 million and the chance to land Gray – who has also struggled to make an impression this season.

Though Townsend is a much more proven player, it would hardly be a surprise if the Palace fans were urging the club to accept the kind of bid that sees them receive cash plus the 21-year-old as part of the deal.

Gray may have scored two fewer goals and contributed one less assist than Townsend in the top flight last term, but his statistics arguably become a lot more impressive when you consider that he made six fewer appearances in the Premier League than the former Tottenham man.

And while Townsend started 30 times in the league, Gray was handed just nine starts by the 2016 champions, so it would appear that the latter was the more productive player when you consider the number of minutes they spent on the pitch.

And with Townsend five years older than Gray, it is difficult to see exactly what would make the Palace hierarchy think that they are getting the worse end of the deal – apart from the fact that the former is the more experienced and established player.

That fact may make them hesitant about selling if they feel that a relegation scrap is on the cards – which is highly possible given their start to the season – but perhaps taking a gamble on Gray this summer will prove to be a masterstroke in the long-term, if the chance to take the youngster presents itself.
