Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion have made attempts to sign Everton midfielder James McCarthy, according to the Daily Mail.

McCarthy has started the campaign at right wing-back, with summer signing Idrissa Gueye taking over his preferred role in central midfield.

This has alerted a number of clubs to McCarthy’s services, including both Crystal Palace and West Brom, who are desperate to strengthen in the middle of the park.

Palace are battling Bournemouth and AS Roma to sign Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere on loan (the Times), while the Baggies have made a bid for Sporting’s William Carvalho (Birmingham Mail).

However, the Daily Mail reports that Everton are reluctant to lose the Irishman without securing a replacement first.

And that does not appear likely with Wednesday’s 11pm deadline fast approaching. The Toffees are instead being linked with moves for Porto winger Yacine Brahimi and Napoli striker Manolo Gabbiadini (Sky Sports).

McCarthy moved to Everton three years ago from Wigan Athletic and fast became a fans favourite at Goodison Park.
