Well, Steven Bergwijn might not have saved his Tottenham Hotspur career after all.
Amid speculation about a transfer away from North London, Bergwijn came off the bench to score two stoppage-time goals as Tottenham won 3-2 at Leicester City on January 19.
It was seen as a potential turning point for a player who, until that point, hadn’t done the business under Antonio Conte after succeeding Nuno Espirito Santo.
However, the Netherlands international has only managed 119 minutes of Premier League football under the Italian manager since that.
And according to Gazzetta Dello Sport in Italy, the former Chelsea and Inter Milan coach does not have a long-term plan for Bergwijn at Hotspur Way and is willing to offload him this summer.
The report adds that AC Milan are plotting a summer overhaul and that the Lilywhites winger could potentially be part of it.
Leaving makes sense
Honestly, the former PSV Eindhoven winger hasn’t looked happy at Tottenham since Nuno was fired in October.
According to The Athletic, Bergwijn, who cost £27 million two years ago, was upset with the club’s decision to axe the former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager.
He was one of Spurs’ most consistent performers early on during the 2021-22 campaign when Nuno was there, but his form hasn’t really recovered since.
And if Conte feels that he doesn’t need him then, well, a departure is logical for all parties.
