The Guardian claim Antonio Conte wants to form a reunion with Inter Milan ace Stefan de Vrij at Tottenham. But, the report also says that de Vrij does not fit Daniel Levy’s ‘desired plan’ for incoming signings this month.

De Vrij, 29, was crucial in Conte’s pursuit of winning the Serie A title in 2021. The Netherlands international is one of the first names on the team sheet at Inter and is still just that – with Simone Inzaghi in the dugout.

With 143 appearances under his belt since joining Inter in the summer of 2018, he is ever-present and consistent. Represented by Mino Raiola, de Vrij is also more than adept at playing anywhere in a back three.

The report states that Conte wants four signings – a centre-back, a right-sided player, a midfielder and a back-up striker. Adama Traore is being linked and the Guardian also claim de Vrij is a target for Conte.

However, the report states that he does not fit Levy’s profile of signings. Indeed, the Tottenham chairman is likely looking at resale value. With de Vrij turning 30 in less than a month – there is little follow-on value.

Conte eyes de Vrij reunion: Levy must change Tottenham plan, once

De Vrij is a top, top player. While he is turning 30 soon, he would be a superb addition to Tottenham’s defensive line – not only because he is more than adept at covering on the left side, but would be their best option.

He has entered the last 18 months of his current deal at Inter – and given his age, he would hardly cost the world. Conte would be making an incredibly smart purchase if he can convince Levy to change his mind.
