Speculation is rife that Tottenham Hotspur have earmarked Antonio Conte as their next manager.

According to The Guardian on Wednesday, Tottenham have held talks with the Italian coach about replacing Jose Mourinho.

The Times has reported that Conte – who quit as Inter Milan coach last month after winning the Serie A title – would demand that linked-away Harry Kane remains in North London.

But according to a report from Italy, the 51-year-old coach may already have a replacement in mind.

La Repubblica have reported that Conte could bring Romelu Lukaku back to London as a replacement for the 27-year-old hitman, who is thought to have told Spurs’ hierarchy that he wants to leave the club.

Good replacement?

Lukaku, who set the Italian club back some £68 million [€80m] in 2019, has Premier League experience and that’s a big positive.

The former Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United striker has netted 113 goals in 252 games during his time in England’s top flight.

Then again, the Tottenham hitman has managed 166 top-flight goals in seven less matches than the Belgian powerhouse.

The truth is that the Lilywhites won’t find a better Premier League goalscorer than Kane, because he is the Premier League’s best goalscorer, but Lukaku is proven and Conte, who knows the player like the back of his hand, may be the right coach to help him reach the next level in North London.
