According to The Athletic, Conor Masterson recommended Caoimhin Kelleher to Liverpool when Manchester United tried to sign him.
It’s claimed that Kelleher was going for a trial with Manchester United in 2015 having been spotted with Ringmahon Rangers in Ireland.
Masterson – who was then in the Liverpool ranks – urged the Reds to sign him, having played together at youth level with Ireland.
Masterson’s recommendation was received by academy scout Matt Newbury, and he was then signed for just £30,000 after impressing on trial.
Kelleher was just 17 at the time, but Liverpool’s gamble on the goalkeeper has paid off five years on.
He has now emerged as Liverpool’s second-choice goalkeeper, leapfrogging Adrian in Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order.

Masterson ended up leaving Liverpool in 2019 as he was released at the end of his contract, failing to make a single first-team appearance for the Reds.
The defender, now at Queens Park Rangers, didn’t quite have the rise of Kelleher, but he at least helped Liverpool land a goalkeeper for the future.
