The playmaker has not played for Mark Warburton’s Glasgow Rangers side since mid-October.

A report in The Scottish Sun has claimed that Rangers have now had it confirmed that Niko Kranjcar will miss the rest of the season due to injury.

The Scottish Sun reports that the 32-year-old suffered a knee injury in a training ground incident. And while initial assessments of the problem hinted that the midfielder could miss a significant period of the campaign, the club could not know for sure until the swelling went down, The Scottish Sun adds.

But The Scottish Sun has now confirmed that Kranjcar’s season is over and he will undergo surgery to reconstruct his anterior cruciate ligament today before spending the next six months on the sidelines.

The news will undoubtedly be a big blow to Rangers boss Mark Warburton, as well as the player himself. The Croatian – much like the Gers – was seemingly beginning to turn a corner in the weeks before he sustained the injury.

The former Premier League playmaker was starting to show the kind of glimpses of quality that persuaded Warburton to take the gamble by bringing him to Ibrox in the first place.

But while many supporters will be concerned about the impact the injury will have on Kranjcar’s game – especially as he will be approaching his 33rd birthday when next season begins – the attacking midfielder will surely look to approach this challenge with the same determination that previously saw him begin to win the fans over.
