Pedro Porro is a player that has been at the centre of a lot of speculation this month.

Tottenham Hotspur reportedly have the wing-back at the top of their list of targets in January, and according to The Mirror, the player himself has agreed to a move to north London.

However, as ever with Spurs, things aren’t as straightforward as the north London club may hope.

Indeed, Sporting aren’t playing ball on the transfer, and they’re holding out for the €45m release clause that is currently in the Spaniard’s contract.

However, there is a chance that the Portuguese club will lose the 23-year-old for less than half that amount.

Indeed, according to 90Min, Sporting are now worried that Manchester City will come in for the player, and that could pose a serious problem for Ruben Amorim’s side.

While Sporting want to sell Porro for €45m, Manchester City have a buy-back clause after selling the player last summer that will allow them to repurchase him for just €20m.

Sporting are starting to get concerned that Porro’s good form could see City make a move for the youngster, and they’re also worried that the Premier League champions could sell him on for a higher fee.

Interestingly, this could play into Spurs’ hands.

Think about it, if Sporting have the choice between selling to City for €20m and selling to Spurs for €35m, which one would they take? Yes, the €35m fee is substantially less than the €45m that they initially wanted, but it’s a lot better than receiving just €20m for the player.

Whether or not City come in for Porro remains to be seen, but Sporting’s growing anxiety around this situation may well play into Spurs’ hands as they continue to monitor the player.
