Real Oviedo are hoping to convince Leeds United to cancel Rafa Mujica’s loan spell at the Spanish second tier club during the January transfer window, as reported by El Desmarque.
It has not been an easy season so far for many of Leeds’ loanees.
Robbie Gotts and Alfie McCalmont are struggling to establish themselves at Lincoln City and Oldham Athletic respectively, while Ryan Edmondson has scored just twice in 11 games north of the border at Aberdeen.
A spell at one of Spanish football’s sleeping giants has not gone to plan for Mujica either.
The 22-year-old striker, who took the seldom-travelled route from Barcelona to West Yorkshire in 2019, has played just 34 minutes of football since joining Real Oviedo in August.
El Desmarque reports that Mujica is well down the pecking order, with ex-Athletic Bilbao coach Jose Angel Ziganda preferring a number of alternative options in attack.
Oviedo, 14th in the 22-team Segunda table, are also planning to reinforce their frontline with Udinese’s Cristo Gonzalez in the New Year.
This all leaves Mujica looking very much like the odd one out, then.
The report claims that Real Oviedo are hoping Leeds would be willing to cut their season-long agreement in half, allowing Mujica to escape his Segunda purgatory and find a club willing to offer him more regular game time.
At the age of 22, the hope was that Mujica would have established himself in the professional game by now. By October 2021, he will be too old for U23 football, so this ill-fated loan spell at Oviedo feels like a missed opportunity.
