Bordeaux have reportedly earmarked Newcastle defender Fabian Schar as a January target, with the French club eager to sign a defender this window.
According to the print edition of the Sun (16/01; page 60), Bordeaux have targeted the Swiss international as a signing in the coming days, with Schar likely the player that has been chosen to replace former Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny.
As reported by L’Equipe via GFFN, the 36-year-old centre-back has recently been excluded from the squad as well as stripped from the captaincy, with Bordeaux also stating their intention to sell Koscielny this window after two seasons with the club.
With Bordeaux in a relegation battle of their own and Newcastle keen to sign a new centre-back, it makes sense why the club are now attempting to sign Schar, who earns a reported £40,000-a-week with the Toon.
Indeed, whilst the centre-back did start Newcastle’s most recent Premier League game against Watford on Saturday, the defender has only player sporadically for the Magpies this season.
The centre-back has started just ten of Newcastle’s 20 Premier League games this season. And with the defender also a regular for the Swiss national team, it makes sense why Bordeaux are keen on Schar.
Schar moving to Bordeaux could be a win-win solution for everyone

Defence is, without question, the area of the squad that needs the most work this January. Yet with numerous centre-backs on Newcastle’s books, it could make sense for one to be sold first before a more reliable option is signed. Which is why Bordeaux’s interest in Schar comes at the perfect time.
Newcastle could be open to selling Schar to Bordeaux for cheap. And with the Ligue 1 side desperate for reinforcements, a deal could be done quite easily and in the coming week.
