Liverpool seem to be one step closer to signing Enzo Fernandez from Benfica after the Portuguese giants found a replacement.

What’s the story?

Well, it was Portuguese news outlet Record who claimed that the Argentina international – who started in the World Cup final win over France – has agreed to join Jürgen Klopp at Anfield.

Now, Benfica – who paid €18m (£16m) for Fernandez back in July – have apparently signed a player Liverpool fans know very well, to cover what looks set to be a void in their midfield.

La Gazzetta Express believe Emre Can – who made 167 appearances for the Reds – has now joined Benfica on loan for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.

It is certainly an interesting move by Benfica, given the intense speculation surrounding Fernandez.

The 21-year-old was already an admired figure across Europe, but after winning the Silver Ball – given to the best young player at the World Cup – his reputation has soared.

Fernandez made seven appearances for Argentina in Qatar – five coming as starts – scoring one goal and providing one assist.

It was telling that Argentina improved significantly once the Benfica No.13 came into the starting XI following the 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia.

Enzo Fernandez is just what Liverpool need

As aforesaid, the South American made a real difference to Argentina after Lionel Scaloni brought him into the starting XI at the World Cup, where he helped the likes of Alexis Mac Allister thrive going forward.

Interestingly, Fernandez is also an effective attacker himself, with his one goal coming in the crucial 2-0 win over Mexico in Group C – it was a fantastic, curled effort.

Such a range of talents will undoubtedly help Klopp’s midfield become more rounded, and like we saw with Mac Allister, it would be no surprise if someone like Harvey Elliott went up a gear with Fernandez playing beside him.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as it seems the World Cup winner may soon be heading to Anfield.
