The Saints aren’t done yet either. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side had a roller-coaster of a season last term. They looked doomed at one point after losing 9-0 to Leicester City at home but beat the odds to finish 11th in the table, 18 points above the drop zone.

Hasenhuttl is determined to push on after some good work in the second half of last season. Salisu is certainly a brilliant addition but the Saints want to bring in another centre-half, if reports are to be believed. (Sky Sports)

Frankfurter Rundschau last month claimed Southampton were interested in signing Eintracht Frankfurt’s Martin Hinteregger before the transfer window closes in October.

The 27-year-old Austrian, labelled a ‘machine’ by boss Adi Hutter, (SGE4ever) has attracted a lot of interest in this transfer window. Southampton were reportedly leading the race for him at one point but another English club have made the first move.

Frankfurter Rundschau claims an unnamed English club, not Southampton, have had an £18 million bid for Hinteregger rejected by the Bundesliga side.

That isn’t the only blow for the Saints in their pursuit. The report claims the Austrian is also uninterested in a move away from Frankfurt this transfer window.

Hinteregger is said to be happy under Hutter and vice-versa, which has made it simple for Frankfurt to retain one of their best players for at least another year.

It seems Southampton will have to look elsewhere for another defender. Salisu is still only 21 and will need time to settle in. An experienced head next to him would be perfect but it seems unlikely to be Hinteregger.
