Lyon have reportedly rejected the chance to sign Real Madrid legend Marcelo, with the French giants instead eyeing a move for rumoured Tottenham target Pervis Estupinan.
According to Foot Mercato, the Ligue 1 side have been offered the chance to sign the Brazilian icon, with Marcelo calling time on an incredible career with Madrid which saw the fullback win five UEFA Champions Leagues and six La Liga titles, making the 34-year-old the most decorated player in Los Blancos’ history.
Despite Marcelo’s sensational title cabinet, Lyon rejected the chance to sign the veteran defender, with the French giants instead focused on signing Estupinan, who is reportedly also on Tottenham’s radar as Antonio Conte looks to replace Sergio Reguilon.
The Villarreal defender enjoyed a fantastic year with Unai Emery’s side as the Yellow Submarine made it to the Champions League semi-finals, with Estupinan set to play a starring role for Ecuador this winter in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
With a reported price tag of £15m, Estupinan could be a bargain signing this summer for many top sides, which is why both Lyon and Tottenham are battling it out to sign the 24-year-old left-back, who is also reportedly wanted by West Ham, who are also looking to strengthen their defence this summer.
As per Foot Mercato, Tottenham could have the advantage when it comes to signing Estupinan with Lyon currently favouring a move for Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico, who could join the French side at a much cheaper fee and bring more quality to the Ligue 1 giants’ backline.
Tottenham have to work fast to beat Lyon to Estupinan signing

Estupinan was one of the breakout stars in La Liga last season, and with the defender an early contender for one of the fullbacks to look out for in Qatar, the fullback’s value could skyrocket in the coming months if no side moves for the Villarreal star, which is why Tottenham must sign the South American before Lyon launch a bid.
Indeed, left-wingback is a crucial position for Conte’s system, and Estupinan could be an excellent long-term option for Tottenham should the north London side beat Lyon to the defender’s signature this summer.
