One of Rangers’ rumoured summer targets has reportedly been offered a new contract.
Rangers are said to have offered £1.5 million for the Preston North End midfielder, Daniel Johnson.
But a deal to bring Johnson to Ibrox could not be agreed and Steven Gerrard’s side turned instead to Bongani Zungu.
Zungu, though, is only on loan at Rangers, who may have alternatives lined up should they fail to exercise their option to sign him outright.
Johnson could well be one of those.
And, if so, the next few weeks will make for interesting viewing, with the 28-year-old one of four Preston players who have received fresh proposals containing ‘significant’ increases on their current terms, according to the Lancashire Evening Post.
Johnson is out of contract at Deepdale next summer and non-English clubs like Rangers can therefore open talks about an end-of-season free transfer from 1 January.
The Jamaica international moved to Preston in 2015 from Aston Villa and has scored or assisted 71 goals in 226 games for Alex Neil’s team.
As well as Zungu, Rangers could lose another midfielder, Steven Davis, at the end of his deal in June.
