According to Marca, Barcelona are now willing to consider offers for Frenkie de Jong, with Liverpool interested in the Dutchman.

What’s the story?

Well, it was SPORT who revealed that Liverpool are interesting in signing the £65m maestro, amid financial difficulty for Barcelona.

The Spanish giants are open to selling most of their players as they look to raise cash, although De Jong was deemed as an untouchable asset.

Now, Barcelona have performed a U-turn, and will consider bids for the 24-year-old if an enticing one arrives this summer.

It comes as a result of De Jong’s performances this season.

Barcelona aren’t desperate to wash their hands of the 38-cap Netherlands international, although they recognise he is a very valuable asset who would bring in a significant sum.

Barcelona are also happy to offload De Jong as he earns a huge salary.

Marca believe the former Ajax playmaker is paid €30m-a-season (£25m).

Should Liverpool sign Frenkie de Jong?

Jürgen Klopp doesn’t really need another central midfielder at Anfield.

Liverpool already have Fabinho, Thiago, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and James Milner.

However, the opportunity to sign a player of De Jong’s quality does not come around often, so the Reds must jump at the chance.

In truth, it would still be a wise move regardless.

Milner is 36 in January, whereas Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain have frequent injury problems.

De Jong – who Dirk Kuyt once called fantastic – still has at least a decade of his best years awaiting him, and also plenty of time to get even better.

If Liverpool don’t at least attempt to sign the silky Dutchman, they may live to regret it.
