According to Sky Germany, Borussia Monchengladbach have a verbal agreement in place to sign Jonas Omlin from Montpellier.
The German club have reportedly agreed a contract with the goalkeeper until 2027, and this is an interesting update due to the fact there is ongoing speculation about Monchengladbach’s current number one goalkeeper – Yann Sommer.
Sommer is being linked to both Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich right now, and one has to imagine that the arrival of Omlin may signal the impending transfer of the ‘world-class’ Swiss international.
Where Sommer ends up remains to be seen.
On one hand, a move to Bayern would suit him to a tee. It allows him the chance to win trophies and stay in a country where he has become very comfortable in recent years. However, once Manuel Neuer is back from injury he’s likely to be relegated to being a backup goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, he’s also wanted by Tottenham and that could be an interesting move for Sommer for a different reason.
Hugo Lloris is currently really struggling as Spurs’ number one, and Sommer could be exactly the type of player Tottenham need to upgrade their goalkeeping position as Lloris’s mistakes continue to cost the north London club points.
Of course, at the age of 34, Sommer is unlikely to be a long-term solution to Tottenham’s goalkeeping issues, but with Lloris seemingly making a costly mistake every other game at this point, Tottenham may think that a short-term solution is necessary at this point.
One way or another, it looks as though Sommer will be on the move this month as his replacement is on his way to Monchengladbach in the shape of Omlin.
