Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign Troy Deeney, the Chronicle report.

Watford have apparently told Newcastle they can sign Deeney, as they look to offload their high earners following their relegation.

The target-man currently earns £100,000-a-week at Watford, which means that he may have to take a pay cut to join Newcastle.

But the 32-year-old could represent the kind of addition that Newcastle are relying on this summer.

Deeney is unlikely to cost much of a fee, and with Newcastle only having limited funds to spend, the striker would at least represent a decent value for money option.

Whether the Magpies will take up Watford’s offer and now make a bid for the powerful forward remains to be seen.

Newcastle do need to improve their scoring threat, but there are question marks over whether Deeney, at the age of 32, is really the player to take them to the next level.

Deeney scored 10 goals in the Premier League for Watford last term, which is considerably more than any Newcastle striker managed, but whether he would represent a significant upgrade on Andy Carroll is up for debate.

What Deeney would definitely bring to Newcastle is leadership qualities, and he was at least hailed by teammate Will Hughes as ‘brilliant’ in that regard last term in the Watford Observer.
