Sheffield Wednesday backed away from signing West Bromwich Albion striker Kenneth Zohore due to concerns over his fitness and the finances involved, according to Examiner Live.
The big-money Dane might have fallen down the pecking order at The Hawthorns. But that did not mean the Baggies were just going to hand him over to Garry Monk’s side.
West Brom wanted Wednesday to pay the majority of Zohore’s £40,000-a-week wages during what would have been a season-long loan spell at Hillsborough.
When you consider that the Yorkshire giants had major doubts over the striker’s fitness, amid an ongoing calf problem, you can understand why they were a little reluctant about making him one of the best-paid players in their Championship roster.
Zohore, of course, is also badly short of match practice.
Since joining West Brom in an £8 million deal from Cardiff City back in 2019, the 26-year-old has started just five league games.
He has not played a single second of football this season either, with his most recent minutes coming in July.
Sheffield Wednesday turned to Derby County’s Jack Marriott on deadline day instead, while Zohore ended up joining second-tier rivals Millwall.
It remains to be seen whether Garry ‘the striker whisperer’ Monk, can help Marriott rediscover the golden touch that once made him the Football League’s most lethal hitman at Peterborough United.
Wilfred Bony, Steven Fletcher, Lukas Jutkiewicz and co have all shone under Monk in the past.
