News broke earlier this week that Newcastle United have a serious interest in Everton’s Anthony Gordon.
A £35m move was touted and the rumour seemed to gather traction rather quickly.
However, a report from the ever-reliable David Ornstein for The Athletic has quickly put this notion to bed.
Indeed, according to this story, Everton have no intention of letting Gordon go this summer, be that to Newcastle or to Tottenham, while their plan is to offer the youngster a new contract to tie him down at Goodison Park.
It seems as though Newcastle and Spurs won’t be getting Gordon this summer, but there is clearly interest there, and that is important.
Let’s be honest, after such a turgid 2021/22 season, Everton may well be relegation candidates again this term, and if they once again find themselves down the bottom of the Premier League, it may not be long before Gordon starts to believe that the grass could be greener elsewhere.
With Newcastle and Spurs keen, the winger may hold off on signing that new contract that Everton will put to him, and while he’s a lifelong Evertonian, club allegiances can go out of the window when your team are standing in the way of your career progression.
Unfortunately for Newcastle and Spurs, Everton aren’t going to be budging on their stance this summer, but perhaps this is a move that can again be looked at in 2023, be that in January or during the summer window.
