According to a report in Calciomercato.com, Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard made a move to sign Claudio Marchisio in the summer transfer window.

Marchisio is a free agent at the moment, having left Russian Premier League club Zenit Saint Petersburg.

It has been reported that Rangers made a move to secure the services of the 33-year-old midfielder, but the Juventus legend turned it down.

Blockbuster signing

Marchisio may be 33 years of age and is past his prime, but the Italy international would have been a blockbuster signing for Rangers in the summer transfer window.

The 33-year-old would have brought panache, experience and a winning mentality to the Rangers midfield.

The defender would have also enhanced Rangers’ chances of making an impact in the Europa League this season, given his vast experience in Europe with Italian giants Juventus.

Rangers and their manager Gerrard now need to move on from Marchisio, and the Gers do have a good and competitive midfield department.
