It is reported to be Leeds holding up signing Abel Hernandez, not the player.
There was hope among Leeds United supporters that when the calendar turned to July, Abel Hernandez would be announced as a new signing having just become a free agent.
Now approaching four days into July, Hernandez is no closer to becoming a Leeds player and remains without a club.
The hold up is not coming from the Uruguayan, according to reports, instead it is at Leeds’ end.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reports: “Leeds have so far held off from securing the free transfer of Abel Hernandez amid concerns about the cost of adding him to their wage bill.”
Leeds are attempting to sign Matej Vydra and have other areas up of the squad to also strengthen.
It is a dangerous game to make Hernandez wait in case a Vydra move falls through, which is effectively what Leeds are doing.
Vydra would cost a fee almost treble the amount Leeds have spent on a player during the past decade.
While Leeds wait, they risk Hernandez’s head getting turned elsewhere.
