Wigan Athletic failed with a deadline day attempt to sign the West Bromwich Albion winger, Jonathan Leko, according to Wigan Today.

The newspaper suggests Wigan had concerns over the player’s fitness and wages – which were ‘understood to be out of the Latics’ reaches’ – although it is unclear which of those factors, if any, was the primary cause of Leko’s failed move.

The West Brom academy product has only appeared five times for Darren Moore’s side this season – and once in the Championship.

He did, however, start the Baggies’ 1-0 win at home to Wigan in the FA Cup third round.

Leko, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but has youth level caps for England, spent part of last season on loan to Bristol City.

The 19-year-old looked set to feature more prominently in this campaign’s final third, until West Brom announced the late window additions of Jacob Murphy and Jefferson Montero to replace Harvey Barnes and Bakary Sako.

Should the Baggies have sent Leko to Wigan?
