Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on signing the Real Madrid midfielder.

According to a report from Football.London, Tottenham will have to fork out €50 million (£44 million) if they want to sign Real Madrid ace Mateo Kovacic this summer.

The 24-year-old joined Los Blancos from Inter Milan in the summer of 2015, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £25.5 million, but he has struggled to establish himself at the Santiago Bernabeu, making just 37 La Liga starts for the Spanish giants.

That is not to say that the Croatia international doesn’t still have a lot to offer at the very highest level, though, and he would surely prove to be a wonderful signing for Spurs, if they do in fact win the race for his signature this summer.

Kovacic could be available, according to Football.London, who report that he has a £44 million release clause inserted into his current contract with Madrid.

Whilst that represents decent value in today’s market, it would still be somewhat of a surprise to see Daniel Levy sanction an offer of such magnitude for one single player.

If Tottenham are to truly make up the jump to the next level, though, they will need to start acting like a big club, and signing Kovacic for £44 million would be a real statement of intent from the north London outfit.
