Reports in Belgium suggest that Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld has a release clause in his contract.
According to Belgian newspaper Le Soir, Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has a €30m (£25m) release clause in his contract – but Spurs have angrily denied such a clause exists, The Mirror claim.
Alderweireld, 27, has become one of the finest defenders in the Premier League in recent years, as he firstly joined Southampton on a season-long loan deal having struggled for first-team football at Atletico Madrid.

His impressive displays with the Saints earned him a move to Tottenham in the summer of 2015, with Spurs paying a measly £11.5m to sign him (The Independent), and in today’s market, that has been a real bargain for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
The Belgian international has formed a superb partnership with compatriot Jan Vertonghen in the heart of the Spurs defence, whilst he’s also scored five goals in his 58 appearances for the club.

Alderweireld is a key man at White Hart Lane, so reports from Belgian newspaper Le Soir have come as a major concern to fans, as they claim that the centre back has a €30m (£25m) release clause in his deal.
A truly top defender like Alderweireld would be a target for many clubs if he was available for just £25m, and Tottenham have unsurprisingly denied the reports, with The Mirror reporting that no Spurs player has a release clause in his contract.

Inserting release clauses in contracts has to be the least Daniel Levy-like move possible, as the Tottenham chairman loves to drive a high price for his top players, and allowing a player of Alderweireld’s quality to leave for just £25m seems like the last thing Levy would do.
Tottenham do have to reject the report though, as Premier League rivals would be waiting to offer £25m to land the defender in January, but Spurs fans seemingly shouldn’t worry about Alderweireld’s future despite those claims in Belgium.
