Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly the ones pushing for Danny Rose and Toby Alderweireld to join Manchester United.

According to The Mirror, it was actually Tottenham Hotspur who contacted Manchester United about deals for Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose, not the other way around.

Spurs didn’t manage to bring in any new signings over the summer, but they did at least manage to keep hold of their key players to boost manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Harry Kane all remain in North London, as do Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose, despite the latter pair seemingly being available.

The Mirror report that whilst Manchester United were linked with both players, the only contact they had with Spurs was a call from Tottenham offering them the chance to bid for the pair.

United seemingly wanted Harry Maguire over Alderweireld and didn’t pursue a move, whilst it’s claimed that manager Jose Mourinho was told to develop Luke Shaw instead of paying around £50million for Rose, who is approaching 29.

That leaves Spurs to deal with both players now, and Rose may still move on before the European transfer deadline on Friday, with a loan move looking likely for a player who has fallen well out of favour under Pochettino.

Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham Hotspur looks on prior to the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham FC at Wembley Stadium on August 18, 2018 in London, United Kingdom.

However, Alderweireld has managed to get back into the Spurs side, starting the 3-1 win over Fulham last weekend, and could yet have a future with Tottenham – but the £25million release clause in his contract which can be activated next summer means that the Belgian may still leave the club in the near future.

Monday’s opponents United didn’t want to splash out on two players nearing their 30’s, and if the report is true, Tottenham seemingly wanted to cash in for similar reasons, but found the Red Devils unwilling to nibble on their transfer bait.
