Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on Sporting’s Bruno Fernandes.
The summer transfer window is still some months away, but Tottenham Hotspur are already being linked with new additions to their squad.
With another Champions League campaign on the horizon, and a move into a new stadium, Spurs fans are keen to see some major reinforcements this summer, even if that is tempered by the knowledge that Daniel Levy is usually frugal.
A new midfielder should be on Pochettino’s wish list given Mousa Dembele’s fitness problems and Harry Winks’ injury issues, and one new name has been linked today.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola report that Tottenham have set their sights on Sporting midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who has hit 13 goals and nine assists for the Portuguese outfit this season, having signed from Sampdoria last summer.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a dream first season with Sporting and could cap it off with a summer move to Tottenham, where he would give Pochettino another versatile playmaking option in the middle of the park.
It’s noted that Fernandes has a €100million (£87.5million) release clause in his contract, but that is merely to protect Sporting against losing him on the cheap, with Spurs in no way expected to pay anywhere near that figure.
However, Daniel Levy and co must be wary, given that Fernandes’ form now means he is likely to represent Portugal at this summer’s World Cup, where his value could sky-rocket with an impressive campaign.
If Spurs are set on signing Fernandes, it would be wise for them to start negotiations as soon as possible before his value has a chance to rise again this summer, as Sporting’s notoriously difficult chairman Bruno de Carvalho may end up demanding the release clause this summer, or a figure close to that amount, which would surely rule Spurs out of the running for the midfielder’s signature as Pochettino looks to lure the young talent to London.
