Victor Wanyama joined Tottenham Hotspur from Southampton in the summer of 2016.
According to The Mirror, West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic wanted to sign Victor Wanyama from Southampton in the summer of 2016.
Wanyama joined Tottenham from Premier League rivals Southampton last summer for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £11 million.
It has been reported by The Mirror that Bilic wanted to sign the former Celtic defensive midfielder before his switch to Spurs.
“OK, we can say they are not buying the players who cost all the money, but they are buying really good players – including some of the ones we wanted last summer,” The Mirror quotes Bilic as saying.
“The Irons boss’ also revealed Tottenham beat West Ham to the signature of more than one player last summer, notably Southampton’s midfield anchor Victor Wanyama,” adds the report.
Always second choice?
West Ham are a big club and are playing in front of over 50,000 fans at the London Stadium this season, but compared to Tottenham, they would always be second choice.
Spurs finished in the top four of the Premier League last season and featured in the group stage of the Champions League this campaign.
The North London outfit could win the league title this season, and ambitious players would be tempted to move to Tottenham.
West Ham will take on Tottenham at the London Stadium in the Premier League on Friday evening.
