ESPN has explained why Andre Villas-Boas decided to stay at Marseille, amid reported interest from Newcastle United.

Newcastle United speculation

Foot Mercato recently reported that Newcastle are looking at the former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea boss as a potential managerial candidate.

L’Equipe then claimed that Villas-Boas has turned down an approach from Newcastle to take charge of the team after the prospective takeover by Saudi Arabia’s PIF goes through.

France24 reported this week that Marseille have said that the Portuguese will stay at the Ligue 1 club beyond the summer despite the departure of Andoni Zubizarreta as the sporting director.

ESPN has now claimed that the Marseille players convinced Villas-Boas to stay next season, with them having formed a strong bond with the former Tottenham boss.

Staying at Marseille

Marseille have finished second in the Ligue 1 table this season, with the campaign already called off due to the global health crisis.

The French club will play in the Champions League next season, and Villas-Boas would be looking to make an impact in Europe’s premier club competition with the Ligue 1 outfit.
