Sheffield Wednesday went on to spend 27 times more than that on Joost van Aken.

Six months after Sky Sports reported that Sheffield Wednesday had failed in an initial £100,000 bid for Blackburn’s Charlie Mulgrew, the Scotland international is said to be attracting Premier League interest.
According to the Mirror, Crystal Palace, Southampton, Burnley and Watford have all scouted Mulgrew this season.
The 31-year-old has been in fine form for Rovers at both ends of the pitch, scoring 11 goals, creating three and helping Tony Mowbray’s side to a defensive record which is bettered by only two of their rivals.
And if any of the above sides were to make an offer for Mulgrew this month, it is likely to far exceed the £100,000 (plus another £100,000 depending on certain clauses being met) that is said to have been put on the table by Wednesday in August.
Given the contrasting form of both he and Wednesday this season, the Owls may regret not going higher at the time – especially after going on to spend considerably more than that (£2.7 million) on Joost van Aken instead.

That being said, the Championship side are much-improved – defensively speaking – since Jos Luhukay replaced Carlos Carvalhal as manager, while Van Aken has plenty of years ahead in which to shake off his early rustiness.
A player of Mulgrew’s experience, however, could have been worth splashing out for – at least in the short term.
