Everton target Paulo Fonseca is reportedly eyeing a move to England.
According to O Jogo in Portugal, Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca has been offered a new contract by the Ukrainian side – but he is set to snub the offer to pursue a Premier League job.
Fonseca, 45, made his name in Portugal with Pacos de Ferreira, Porto and Braga before heading to Ukraine in 2016, replacing Mircea Lucescu as Shakhtar Donetsk boss – and his move has been a real success so far.
The Portuguese boss won a domestic double last season, before adding the Ukrainian Super Cup last summer, whilst Shakhtar are not only on course for another title win under Fonseca, but also reached the last 16 of the Champions League.
Shakhtar understandably want to keep Fonseca at the Donbass Arena, but it’s claimed that he has dreams of managing in the Premier League this summer, and will subsequently snub Shakhtar’s offer of a new contract.
Everton calling?
Ever since sacking Ronald Koeman back in October, Everton have been linked with moves for Fonseca, with the Daily Mail recently claiming he was still a target for the Toffees despite the appointment of Sam Allardyce in 2018.
Allardyce’s patchy results and poor brand of football mean that Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri may look for another new manager this summer, and reports surrounding Fonseca should be music to his ears.
The Mozambique-born boss allegedly wants to manage in the Premier League, meaning that even a giant such as Paris Saint-Germain – reportedly keen given questions over Unai Emery’s future – could be beaten by Everton for his services.
If Fonseca is making himself available this summer, then Moshiri may need to pull the trigger and replace Allardyce with one his top targets of the last six months – or risk losing out to a Premier League rival.
