Newcastle United are keen on signing Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips in a move which would surely delight Kieran Trippier.
Kalvin Phillips remains on the Newcastle United radar with the Magpies now chasing a loan deal for the midfielder.
That’s according to The Telegraph, who claim that Newcastle are looking at potential loan additions.
The Magpies have splashed the cash on signing Sandro Tonali, with the AC Milan star completing his move on Monday.
That deal has eaten into the Newcastle budget and Eddie Howe is now seeking loan signings to bolster his squad.
Phillips is thought to be on target after a difficult first season at City.
The 27-year-old only managed two Premier League starts for City after joining from Leeds for £45million.
Phillips and Conor Gallagher are loan targets for Newcastle with both chasing first-team minutes ahead of Euro 2024.
It’s hard to see City or Chelsea doing Newcastle many favours in the transfer market and these pursuits will be difficult for the Magpies.
Kieran Trippier is a big fan of Kalvin Phillips
Phillips has shown his quality before having excelled for Leeds and England, especially at Euro 2020.
One man who was really impressed during that tournament was now-Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier.
The Magpies ace was quoted as saying that Phillips brings ‘phenomenal’ intensity and backed him to go as far he wanted in the game.
Trippier added that Phillips is a ‘fantastic player’, predicting a ‘great future’ ahead of the midfielder.
Phillips would certainly have Trippier’s backing at Newcastle, but we can’t quite see this move materialising.
If Newcastle are to add another midfielder, it would surely be a playmaker or a player with real goal threat, like Gallagher.
Newcastle have just added a player who can either protect the back four or drive forward from deep in Tonali, and we can’t see Phillips joining the Italian at Tyneside – even if Trippier is a fan.
